BOSTON, MA., 29 July, 2010 -- The University of Massachusetts Boston and R&D leader Battelle Memorial Institute have formed an exploratory alliance for the purpose of becoming a recognized leader in the complex intersection of issues that are the focus of the university’s newly established Collaborative Institute for Oceans, Climate, and Security (CIOCS).

COLUMBUS, OH., 27 July, 2010—Battelle has been contracted by the Grand Lake Restoration Commission to act as an independent reviewer of work done by Wright State University-Lake Campus in tackling the blue-green algae problem at Grand Lake St. Mary’s. The scope of the contract calls for Battelle to review the assessment of restoration alternatives that are being evaluated this summer in a small portion of the lake including the potential of these technologies for other areas of the lake.

COLUMBUS, OH., 14 July, 2010—Pam Hurst, Battelle’s Senior Market Manager for Navy Undersea Systems in the National Security Global Business (NSGB), has been appointed to the advisory board for the Department of Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. Hurst is a graduate of the engineering school at URI.

ATLANTA, GA., 8 July, 2010—Battelle Principal Research Scientist Roy Johnson was part of a team that was awarded the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) Presidential Award for outstanding contributions to support public health laboratories during the influenza H1N1 pandemic response. The award was presented to the Influenza Division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

LEXINGTON, MA., 6 June, 2010 – The Climate Registry recently recognized Battelle for its capabilities and experience in climate change consultation by adding it to The Climate Pages (TCP), a publicly posted list of pre-screened and qualified climate consultation firms and verification bodies. TCP provides companies with independent validation of its members’ capabilities, and gives easy access to their services. COLUMBUS, OH., 26 May, 2010 – The Ohio STEM Committee, chaired by Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut of the Ohio Board of Regents, announced May 17 the winners of funding awards under the STEM Initiatives program. The awards are intended to fund public/private collaborations to strengthen Ohio's competitiveness in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and STEM education fields. The state’s FY 2010/2011 budget set aside $10 million in funding, with $5 million directed toward each fiscal year.

COLUMBUS, OH., 13 May, 2010 – Battelle and RCM Solutions of Bowie, MD, have teamed under a $2.1-million task order to conduct information sharing exercises for leaders and officials across some of the 18 key industry and economic sectors. CHICAGO, IL., 3 May, 2010 –The U.S. bioscience industry continued to score employment gains through 2008 – the first year of the recent economic downturn, according to a study released today by Battelle and the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO). The Battelle/BIO State Bioscience Initiatives 2010 contains the most recent data available and shows that publicly traded bioscience-related companies on the whole generated positive net growth through 2009.

COLUMBUS, OH., 3 May, 2010—Chad Bouton, a Senior Research Scientist in Medical Device Solutions, was named Battelle’s Inventor of the Year at the organization’s annual Recognition and Rewards Banquet April 30 in Columbus. Bouton works in Battelle’s Health and Life Sciences Global Business. “Chad’s innovations and inventions have directly led to multiple medical devices being placed on the market and in use today,” said Barbara Kunz, President of Battelle’s Health and Life Sciences Global Business. “The quality of life of patients worldwide has been improved because of Chad’s efforts.”

COLUMBUS, OH., 22 February, 2010 – One of the really thorny issues in deploying solar, wind and electric-car technologies involves efficiently storing energy. With that in mind, Battelle scientists are in the early stages of developing a technology that addresses storage needs affordably.

DUBLIN, OH., 10 February, 2010—Battelle boosted its growing manufacturing output this week with the shipment of key electronics for UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. These units are only the most recent in a succession of advanced electronic devices manufactured at the Blazer Parkway facility. Work proceeds at this production facility even as building construction and expansion strives to keep up with the burgeoning orders for advanced electronics and scientific instruments.
