Student Participation
Students are encouraged to attend the Conference and will find their participation valuable to their career development. In addition to the technical information gained by attending presentations and visiting exhibits, students will be able to meet and talk with environmental professionals representing a wide range of work experience and employers.
Reduced Registration Rate. The student rate is approximately half the university rate and provides full access to all technical sessions, exhibits and meals. Full-time students are eligible; documentation of current enrollment is required.
Student Poster Competition. Students with abstracts accepted for the technical program as poster presentations will be given the opportunity to participate in a poster competition. Posters will be judged by a panel of experts and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be selected and awarded at the Closing Panel Session.
Student registrants will be contacted by the Conference Office closer to the Conference to opt-in to participate.
Career Development, Direction, and Growth Panel Discussion | Monday, January 27, 1:00-2:40 p.m. | Pre-Registration NOT Required
Attendees will hear perspectives on career direction from a variety of different industry stakeholders and will come away with strategies they can employ to direct their own practice to grow and advance their careers.
Panelists will represent a wide range of perspectives from the contaminated sediment industry, including practitioners from construction companies, environmental consultants, academia, non-governmental organizations, and regulatory agencies. Panelists will share a brief presentation on an aspect of careers in contaminated sediment or about career development.
The moderators will facilitate a panel conversation including topics such as making the transition from fieldwork to task and project management; how recruiters are using LinkedIn; strategies to overcome career stagnation; seeking out mentors, skills, or certifications to accelerate career growth; how to showcase qualifications to hiring authorities; strategies for remote networking; personal development for career success; and how to expand professional influence within the industry.
Career KickStarter | Monday, January 27, 3:00-5:00 p.m. | Pre-Registration Required
This event is intended for students and young professionals (less than 5 years in their field). It is a program designed to foster networking and mentorship within the environmental sector. Participants will be matched with an experienced professional in a mentorship relationship, which both mentee and mentor are committed to sustaining for 1 year.
Mentors will provide guidance and constructive criticism to students, actively engage their professional network to strengthen the student’s network, educate the student on the ins-and-outs of their own profession, have regular meetings to ensure the students goals are being met, and most importantly, provide encouragement.
All participation is voluntary and there is no cost to attend, but pre-registration is required to match mentors and mentees. A target of 20-30 professionals is desired for successful implementation.
NOTE: the links below will direct you to the Google forms provided by the Career KickStarter organizers.
Student Scholarships. A sponsorship opportunity is being offered to fund student scholarships. If funded, scholarship monies will be used to financially support a student’s onsite attendance at the Conference. Scholarships will be open to any student who is enrolled in a 4-year college or university, pursuing a degree in an environmental field of study or similar and will provide conference registration and travel funding.
Scholarship recipients will be selected by a Battelle committee and based on the personal statement of need and the expected benefit shared by the student.
Additional participation information will be published on this page as soon as available. For Sponsors interested in participating, please see the Sponsors and Exhibitors page for the link to the Registration site where sponsorship opportunities are published.
